E-Mail Attachments with AOL

Sending the attachment:

  • While composing (writing) a message), click the "Attachments" button in the lower left corner of the message window.
  • The window shown at right will appear.  Click the "Attach" button. 
  • Browse on your hard drive or disk to locate the file to be attached and click OK.
  • The file selected in the previous step will be listed in the window shown at right.   If there are additional files to attach (you can attach several), click the "Attach" button again and repeat the steps.
  • When you are done attaching files, click "OK"

A couple of notes - These instructions were prepared for AOL version 4.0 and may vary slightly for versions 3.x or 5.x.  Also, make sure the file you are about to send as an attachment is closed.  If the document is still open in the word processor, for instance, AOL will not transmit it!

Receiving the attachment:

When you receive a message with AOL that has an attachment, the message window will include a button along the lower part of the window for "download attachment".   Click this button, choose a file name and destination (it will look much like any "save" window.  And click "OK" to signal you are ready.   Also, AOL will include a warning dialog box along the way to ask if you really want to download the file - do you know the person who sent it?  If you receive attachments from unknown persons, you may not wish to open it for fear of receiving a virus.
