Using E-Mail ListServs in Education

A listserv is a method of distributing messages of common interest to a large group of subscribers automatically.  They allow for discussion to take place among some members of the group while others may choose to simply read and learn from the dialogue.   ListServs are available for a wide range of topics of personal interest as well as professional interest.  Most categories of educator have their own subject/level-specific listservs.

Some lists require a "sponsor" to gain admission to the group while others are open to anyone and everyone.  Some lists are "moderated" - a single manager reads messages and may choose not to post all messages, particularly if a message seems to be intended to inflame or if a message reveals a lack of consideration for the previous discussions that have taken place on a list.  Check your professional journals for addresses and instructions for subscribing to listservs relevant to your assignment in the district.

Important Note:  When you subscribe to a listserv, the first message they send you will be instructions on how to get out of the List when the day comes it no longer meets your interests or needs.  SAVE THIS E-MAIL!  You will need it.  You certainly don't want to send a message to the entire listserv telling everybody you want out of their group (especially since this won't probably get the list administrator to remove your e-mail address, anyway!)

Sample ListServs for Foreign Language:

To subscribe to a French ListServ, send an e-mail message to listserver@UQuebec.ca.  Leave the subject field blank. In the message field, type your name.  Send the message!

To subscribe to the German AATG ListServ, send an e-mail message to listserv@listserv.iupui.edu.  Leave the subject field blank.  In the message field type:  subscribe aatg "your name".  Send the message and DO NOT use a signature line.

To subscribe to FL Teach ListServ (mostly Spanish and French teachers hang out here!), send an e-mail message to  LISTSERV@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDULeave the subject field blank.  In the message type only the following: Subscribe FLTEACH "first name, last name".  Send the message and DO NOT use a signature line.  By return email you will receive a welcome message and instructions for using FLTEACH. (You can unsubscribe at any time.)

If there are other good sites that should be added to this list, please let Dr. West know so they can be added!  Return to the e-mail main page.
