E-Mail Attachments with Outlook

Sending the attachment:

  • While composing (writing) a message), click the Insert button on the menu bar
  • The drop-down menu  shown at right will appear.  Click the "File" button. 
  • Browse on your hard drive or disk to locate the file to be attached and click OK.
  • The file selected in the previous step will be listed in the message window as an icon for the software that created the message.
  • Repeat the steps above to attach additional files.

Note that the Outlook menu bar may also include a paperclip icon.  Clicking the paperclip icon will also allow you to browse, locate, and attach a file.

Receiving the attachment:

When you receive a message with Outlook that has an attachment, the attachment icon will either be listed as part of the message or a paperclip icon will appear at the upper right corner of the e-mail message.  You may open an attachment by clicking either the paperclip icon or by clicking the document icon that appears within the text of the message.  After the attachment is opened, save it (if you really want to keep it).
