Building a Web Site

Web Site Planning - Organizing Pages & Files
No matter what editor we use to create pages, "site
organization" is essential. When we publish to the web, we typically
create multiple pages that are linked to each other, include graphics or sound
files - many files that must be saved with appropriate names and with careful
linking. Organization and planning are essential if our web sites are to
work well with a minimum troubleshooting effort.
Some web authoring tools also include site management tools. For
example, FrontPage '98 includes an "Explorer" feature to take care of making
sure links between pages, graphics, etc. are maintained even as the site is being edited.
FrontPage 2000 has integrated the "Explorer" and editor into a
single program. But many folks create and maintain multi-page web sites by simply planning
carefully and following a few worthwhile guidelines. Here are some of those
suggestions for successful site management.
- Name files carefully
- To make file names that work well regardless of the platform (Mac, PC, Unix) being used,
begin the file name with a letter (a-z). Use only letters, digits (0-9), and the
underscore key ( _ ) within a file's name. End every web page file name with the
extension ".htm". End graphic files with the appropriate extension (e.g.,
".gif" or ".jpg"). Keep file names short, yet meaningful.
And assume that addresses in your site will be case sensitive - some web servers
are case sensitive and some are not.
|
- Save files systematically
- Create a folder in which to store all files associated with your web site. Then,
inside the web folder, create a sub-folder to store all images to be used in the site.
When creating links between pages and incorporating images, make sure to use only a
relative address - no internal links should begin: "file:\\\"
or "C:\".
