Session 5 - Posting your work!
The big moment has come - your page is ready to display to the world for view. But how do you get the page visible to anyone and anywhere? Here are a series of questions and answers to help guide you to your new prominence in the world.
Where will your page be posted? One possible answer to this question is with a web service provider such as America Online or A.T.&T. If this is your answer, check their instruction pages for the latest on how to properly send your files and any restrictions for naming files. If you are posting your pages on the Blue Valley District server, you will either need to arrange with our Web Manager at District Office for an account name and password or you'll need to give him a floppy disk with the files on it. Posting your own pages (other than taking them physically to our Web Manager) may be done with built-in software for packages like AOL or with add on features or programs as are listed in the next session. Several sites provide free hosting - how do they do that? They will add some amount of advertising to your page or in pop-up windows when your site is browsed. You may not want advertising but the price for the hosting is certainly right - free! Two such sites are:
- Homestead.com - This site has no advertising and no banner other than the one that says Homestead. You can work online or offline with an available download editor. Insert line breaks, horizontal rules, java Applets, a hit counter, hover button, navigator bar, marquee, time stamp and table of contents very easily. The site does NOT support FrontPage extensions.
- Tripod.com - This site has the ability to use FrontPage extensions but does include a more intrusive advertising banner on your pages. An offline editor is also available free from this site.
How can I send the pages? Again, your service provider may have a sofware for submitting pages - look for the directions. AOL is still not efficient, though, since it only lets you send ONE file at a time. And so an alternatived method may be desirable. Even AOL allows you to send multiple files from your computer to the romote location IF you use another posting tool.
Built-in tools: Netscape and FrontPage both have automatically publishing features. For Netscape, click the "publish" tool on the tool palette and supply the necessary URL and password to complete the transfer. For FrontPage, use the "Explorer" feature and click the "Publish" button. Since FrontPage publishes an entire web site, make sure the web site (probably the folder containing the web page) is the item that is selected on the "Explorer" screen before clicking "Publish".
Non-built-in tools: What is this software and where is it? For the Mac: Programs such as Anarchie and Fetch are very popular. They may be downloaded from such places as www.download.com by entering the software name, searching, and then downloading. It may also be acquired from sumex-aim.stanford.edu:/info-mac mirror in the com/inet directory. For the PC: the same advice for finding the software applies (use the download.com iste). A good FTP client for the PC is ws_ftp. It may also be acquired from ftp.winsite.com. Remember to pay any licensing fee if you acquire shareware!
