Publishing a Web

Note - this system is what to use assuming your web space has been reserved/set up on the Blue Valley Schools server.  Blue Valley employees needing assistance in getting a publishing space should contact the course instructor9s).

After web pages are saved, the web is stored locally on the machine where it was created/edited.  Here are the steps to publishing your web.

Select "Publish Web..." from the File menu.  The screen at right will be displayed.

Enter the address of the web site (as shown).

Click the "Publish" button.  Supply your user name and password when prompted.  Publishing takes several minutes for larger webs, so be patient.

After the communication has completed between the local computer and the host site for the web page, a confirmation message will be displayed.  Clicking the text to view will open the browser, clicking "Done" immediately allow a return to the editor to continue work.

Opening a Published Web

Same computer:  Working on the same web at the computer where it was most recently edited may just involve selecting it from the "Recent Webs" menu choice of the File menu.

Different computer:  Select "Open Web" from the File menu.  A dialog box will be opened (as shown below).  If your web page is one of those displayed in the by name, double-click it.  In this example, the name of the web site to be opened has been typed in the "Folder name:" window near the bottom of the screen.

You'll once again be prompted for the user name and password that was used in publishing the page in the first part of this lesson.

If others use this computer, it is wise to uncheck the "Save this password" option.

When work on the web has been completed, it can be republished by clicking the "Publish" icon on the toolbar.

Republishing A Web

If the technique listed above is used to open the web on the remote server, then as page changes are saved, they are already published.  Actually, publishing the web becomes necessary only once!

On the other hand, if we work on and initially create the web on our local computer, then re-open it on the local computer, edit, then it is necessary to publish the changes.

You may ask, how can I tell if saving is sufficient or if I need to publish after making changes?  Look at the web in "Folders" view as shown below:

The window excerpt on the left is a web stored on a local computer (on a C: drive) and must be published after editing.  The window excerpt on the right is stored at the host server and should not be published - saving files is all that is needed!
