Making connections with FrontPage:  Links

There are two ways to adjust how links are displayed when using frames.  Either way, we may create links from our pages to any other page on the Internet using the same techniques used before (click the link-globe icon or select "Hyperlink" from the Edit menu).

Do you want the web page to which we are linking to appear in the current frame space on the screen (preserving other frames on the screen untouched) or do you want the new page to be displayed filling the entire browser window?  Or it is also possible to send a newly opened page into some other frame on the screen.

Begin by clicking "Target Frame" on the "Linking" window to change it from "Page Default (main). Then, click "OK".

Here is a quick description of each of the choices for common targets shown above when a hyperlink results in a page being displayed:

Same Frame
A hyperlinked page will appear in the same frame in which the original hyperlink was clicked.
Whole Page
This returns the display to a full screen size (no frames) and displays the page to which we were linked.
New Window
This results in the linked page being opened in its own brand new window.  Note that the "back" button in the browser will not be active since this is a new window.  Instead, to go back, the viewer would need to close the newly opened browser window.
Parent Frame
This results in the linked page being displayed in the parent frame if the link was in one of the sub-frames.

A similar adjustment may be made generically for the entire frame (not changing settings one link at a time as shown above).  For this adjustment, select "Frame Page Properties" in the Frame menu.  Select "General" to adjust the appropriate setting.  By clicking the "Default Target Frame:" button, a list of commonly accepted frames will be displayed (just like the one above.)   Select the desired target frame.  Click "OK" and you're done!
