Building a Web Site Part II
Web Site Planning - Organizing Pages & Files

FrontPage 2000 does a great job of managing the links between our pages within a web site.  To take advantage of the capabilities of FrontPage, though. we must make sure to save our work in the web site's folder and using properly named files.  Here are a couple of guidelines:

Name files carefully
To make file names that work well regardless of the platform (Mac, PC, Unix) being used, begin the file name with a letter (a-z).  Use only letters, digits (0-9), and the underscore key ( _ ) within a file's name.  End every web page file name with the extension ".htm".  End graphic files with the appropriate extension (e.g., ".gif" or ".jpg").  Keep file names short, yet meaningful.   And assume that addresses in your site will be case sensitive - some web servers are case sensitive and some are not.
Save files systematically
Use a folder in which to store all files associated with your web site.  Then, inside the web folder, use the sub-folder to store all images to be used in the site.   When creating links between pages and incorporating images, make sure to use only a relative address - no internal links should begin:  "file:\\\" or "C:\".
