This course provides an exploration of the resources available via the World Wide Web (WWW) portion of the Internet. Absolute beginners will learn how to get connected. All participants will explore several of the most popular starting points on the web. Resources and information for virtually every subject or curricular area will be investigated hands-on. Ideas for teacher research and for student project work will be discussed and tried. Finally, issues regarding copyright and access to inappropriate materials/appropriate use agreements will add a final practical note to the course.


Topics

Session 1 - How to get connected and basics of beginning to use the WWW. Getting news and information.

Session 2 - Resources on the web (educational and curriculm-specific)

Session 3 - Favorite jumping off places for the web - search engines

Session 4 - Other resources on the Internet - pictures, software, gopher sites, etc.

Session 5 - Miscellaneous topics and participant presentations Acceptable use, copyright, what next?


Grading and expectations

For a grade of "B" the participant will:

  1. Utilize standard features of a browser to navigate the Internet.
  2. Apply an understanding of URLs to 
  3. Use effective strategies to search of information on the Internet
  4. Apply information literacy skills to solve problems using the Internet.
  5. Identify web sites that are particularly useful for teaching, learning, and personal interest.
  6. Demonstrate understanding and adherence to copyright laws and district "appropriate use policies".
  7. Devise a lesson activity in which students use WWW resources.

Week 2----Problems to Solve

Plan a vacation that utilizes searching techniques, getting images/maps, interacting with information sources, purchasing things, Mini lesson on effective search strategies, graphics (GIFs, JPEGs).  Work time on their problem.  Mini-lesson on setting up email account for travel updates, if they need it

Week 3---Working on Vacation Problem

Amending and improving plan---addition of original pictures via digial camera and uploading to Photopoint Continue to work on vacationPresent at end of class-----5 minute summary

Week 4---Applying learning from vacation problem to something that they can use at their work site Mini-lesson on matching learning objectives with web resources (BVLMC, Blue Webn, Education World, Kathy Schrock); advanced search techniques; specialized searches; unique types of web resources (LOC, CNN, ALA, Cable in Classroom, Classroom Connect, Webquest); interactive components of web (Quia, FunBrain, Filmentality) gurunet.com; and how to access Professional development sites (ProQuest)

PS---gurunet.net was a feature article in the Wall Street Journal last Thursday. I'd never heard of it before and then Blake's comment and the article I read later that same day. Amazing.  Work time on expanding ideas into useful classroom product

Week 5----Finish up projects and presentation showcase of application work Evaluate how well they met objectives we laid out in week 1 In addition, we are going to ask them to post comments on Eboard every week.  I will create a site tonight. Each week they should have 3 postings----1 suprise, 1 discovery, and 1 reaction to someone else's learning. In addition, they should post their 10 "favorite" websites with an annotation by Week 4. I think we should ask the week 5 postings to comment specifically on the hotlists.
